The Islamic Republic of Pakistan was born on August 14, 1947, with the partition of British India. This partition divided the former British colony into two nations, India and Pakistan.

Pakistan is the sixth largest country in the world, and the second largest Muslim country after Indonesia. To date, it is still the only nuclear armed Muslim nation.

Pakistan’s leaders have always emphasized the nation’s role as the “Fort of Islam.” The nation’s founders believed it would eventually emerge as a modern, and model, Muslim state.

However, Pakistan has not quite lived up to these lofty goals. It has experienced four military coups, one civil war, multiple wars with India, and a protracted war against extremist militants.
