I enjoyed this podcast but your take on the podcast and the “wether you like it or not” aspect of your podcast is incorrect. I wish I could do a one on one with you I regards to this topic . You’re opinion on you’re either shiite or Sunni and you have to choose comes off misguided and to some level ignorant. I don’t mean that in any offensive matter but myself as someone who’s studied the religion and history for about two decades now I se things differently. You can not ask people to choose which “politically driven” sides they should choose based of very little actual evidence from 1400 years ago or slightly less that that. I encourage the listeners of this podcast to do an in-depth research and speak to scholars and members of both Sunni and shiite and you’ll get a better understanding.
Thanks for your comment and feedback.
Of late, I have begun to leave my personal opinion out of the podcast, particularly the segment where I speak off the cuff after the episodes. I find I say many things that probably did not need to be said and it’s better if I read from a tightly edited script.
That being said, I don’t think what I said was that far off-base. My intent was not to demand people make a choice; it was to have them realize that they’ve subconsciously already done so.
The reality is that most people have already explicitly made up their minds. And those few who claim to be neither, if they look at their individual practices, they will see that they’re either Sunni or Shiite.
This is anecdotal evidence, but every person I’ve met who claims to be neither, adopts the practices of one or the other. Regardless of their claims, their practices speak otherwise.
Most Muslims will not have the time nor the desire to do in-depth research and interview scholars from both sects. Most people will follow whatever they were raised in and adopt those same biases.
I reiterate: My intent was not to say “Pick a side.”
My intent was to say: “You’ve already picked one.”
